The Navyman’s Wife

Now you are gone
and will not be back
for several months.

You have boarded your ship
and I am alone.

I cannot bridge
these continents and seas.
I cannot sail these miles
of islands and earth
and find you.

Even if I could,
I do not know where to look.
My pole star has gone dark.
My compass spins.

The fog rolls in
and I am rudderless
and without you
without you I’m afraid
I’ll run aground
and be dashed upon the rocks.

I need my lighthouse again.
